Revolutionizing Preventative Healthcare: Integrating Digital and Clinical Data for Enhanced Health Monitoring
A Case Study on Hannover Re, Alula Technologies, and Ally Health’s Collaborative Pilot Program
Summary
Hannover Re is one of the world’s leading reinsurers, providing comprehensive reinsurance solutions across various lines of business. With a commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions, Hannover Re sought to explore new ways to improve health monitoring and risk assessment. Alula Technologies is a global technology group specializing in health engagement solutions. Their VivaScore app aggregates health data from various sources, providing users with a comprehensive health score. Ally Health is a provider of on-demand clinical care, offering services such as blood tests and health assessments. Their collaboration with Alula Technologies aimed to bridge the gap between digital health data and clinical diagnostics. This case study examines their 12-week pilot program, detailing the challenges, solutions and outcomes.

Project Challenge Outline
The primary challenge was to address the limitations of traditional health assessments, which often rely on self-reported data. These assessments can be inaccurate and fail to provide a comprehensive view of an individual’s health. Hannover Re aimed to leverage Alula’s digital health platform and Ally Health’s clinical services to create a more reliable and holistic health monitoring system.
The goals of the pilot program were to:
- Improve personal health awareness among participants.
- Enhance early disease detection through comprehensive health monitoring.
- Reduce the need for confirmatory tests by integrating digital and clinical health data.
- Provide insurers with valuable insights for risk assessment and personalized wellness programs.

Solution Outline
In order to address the challenge, Hannover Re partnered with Alula Technologies and Ally Health to explore innovative solutions for preventative healthcare and insurance risk assessment. They underwent a 12-week pilot program involving 30 Hannover Re employees who used Alula’s VivaScore app. The app aggregates data from various sources, including wearable devices, rPPG face scanning technology, and clinical health checks provided by Ally Health. The VivaScore app calculates a dynamic health score based on the following data sources:
- Wearable Devices: Participants connected their wearable devices to the app, enabling the tracking of metrics such as sleep, activity, calories burned, steps taken, floors climbed, and heart rate.
- rPPG Imaging: Participants completed digital health checks using rPPG face scans, which measure vital signs such as heart rate variability, breathing rate, and blood pressure.
- Clinical Health Checks: Two weeks after the initial digital health check, participants underwent blood tests and comprehensive in-person health assessments provided by Ally Health.
The integration of these data sources provided a holistic view of each participant’s health. Participants received weekly reports with insights into their current health scores and activity levels, along with tailored suggestions for improvement based on measured health metrics.
Business Outcomes & Experience
The pilot program yielded several positive outcomes. Participants discovered new information about their health, leading to increased engagement and proactive health management. For example, some participants learned about their cholesterol levels and the differences between good and bad cholesterol. The comprehensive health data allowed for more accurate risk assessment and personalized wellness programs. Insurers could use this data to identify high-risk individuals and direct them towards medical consultation. Additionally, 32% of participants reported behaviour changes by the end of the pilot, indicating the program’s effectiveness in promoting healthier lifestyles. Participants valued the seamless integration with their wearable devices and the convenience of the rPPG face scanning technology. By identifying high-risk individuals early, the program has the potential to reduce long-term healthcare costs and insurance claims. The proactive identification of health risks allows for timely interventions, reducing the need for more cost-intensive treatments.
Partner Collaboration
The collaboration between Hannover Re, Alula Technologies, and Ally Health was instrumental in the success of the pilot program. Alula’s VivaScore app provided the digital health platform, while Ally Health offered clinical services and in-person health checks. Hannover Re facilitated the pilot and provided valuable insights into the insurance industry’s needs. This partnership demonstrated the potential of combining digital and clinical health data to revolutionize health monitoring and insurance risk assessment. The seamless integration of these technologies allowed for a comprehensive view of participants’ health, enabling proactive identification of health risks and personalized wellness programs.
